Old Mine Buildings, Ny Alesund
Old coal grading buildings, Ny Alesund, Svalbard. The coal mine, and the settlement were abandonded in 1963, after the Kings Bay Affair - 71 people were killed in accidents in the coal mines in between 1945 and 1963, and the Norwegian government resigned following an investigation. 21 people died in the 1962 accident. The mine closed down, and was later supplanted by the scientific research basis that exists today. Note coffin painted on the wall to mark the deaths.
