Clapper Bridge, Mayo

Clapper Bridge, Mayo, built by a John Alexander, a member of a Protestant colony in the 1840s, known as the Society for the Protection of Rights of Conscience. The colony sought to convert Catholics during the famine through the use of soup kitchens. This design of bridge has been in use as far back as prehistoric times in Britain, but not so common in Ireland.
