Meltpool with Cryoconite on Petermann Glacier
Meltpool with Cryoconite on Petermann Glacier. The dark rubble - mud, rocks, parts of meteorites and human pollution gather in heaps on the ice - as they are dark, they attract heat, and eventually melt neat holes in the glacier. In 2010 and 2012 Petermann calved ice islands totalling 400 square kilometres.
