Constructed for coal mining company Store Norske in the 1970s by construction firm Moelven Bruk, with colours chosen by Grete Smedal, professor of art and design in Bergen. The northernmost settlement with more than 1,000 people on earth, and is quite well-serviced town, with an airport and university and hospital, just 1300km from the North Pole
