Tasmanian devil feeding at night, near Arthur River
Wild Tasmanian Devil photographed using handheld remote control trigger at Kingsrun, Geoff King's "devil restaurant" on his land near Arthur River, north west Tasmania. The devils are lured using a staked-out roadkill wallaby, under spotlights beside an old fishing hut on the beach. Tasmania's northwest is the only area not yet affected by Devil Facial Tumour Disease, which has caused a population crash elsewhere on the island. ..The disease is a contagious cancer that scientists are only beginning to understand, but has spread rapidly through the population, leaving the devil listed as endangered. In December 2009, it was announced that the disease may be related a peripheral nerve cell, called the Schwann cell, which has led some hopes for preserving the devil, at least in terms of quarantine insurance populations.
