Pollution from passenger ships burning heavy fuel oil or diesel. Poor air quality in ports, due to the burning of fossil fuels is linked to health issues such as asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, and premature death. The air on the deck of passenger ships can be as bad as in the most polluted cities on Earth. In terms of climate change, global shipping accounts for around 3% of global emissions - about the same as the country of Germany.
