On December 15 2008, authorities at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan, closed the tuna auction to visitors for a month, citing safety and health reasons. Authorities said that tourists were getting in the way of workers and touching the fish. Guards are to be placed at entrances to keep visitors away. The morning I visited, whale meat from endangered fin whales imported from Iceland to Japan was on sale.
